Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level domain names remained operational.
